Ingredients
Scale
- 6 large apples – peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
For the Crumble Topping:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup rolled oats
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter – cold and cut into small cubes
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large mixing bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until evenly coated.
- Transfer the apple mixture to a greased 9-inch baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
- In another bowl, combine flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, and salt.
- Add the cold butter cubes to the flour mixture and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to blend until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples in the baking dish.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender when pierced with a fork.
- Allow to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream or custard.
Notes
- Use tart apples like Granny Smith for a balanced sweet and tangy flavor.
- Keep the butter cold to achieve a crumbly, crisp topping texture.
- You can add chopped nuts or dried fruit to the topping for extra texture and flavor.
- To make ahead, prepare the apple filling and crumble topping and freeze before baking. When ready, bake from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the cooking time.
