Ingredients

2 cups baking soda
1 cup cornstarch
1 1/4 cups water
Food coloring (optional)

For Salt Dough Clay:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup salt
1 cup warm water

For Soft Play Clay:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup salt
2 tbsp cream of tartar
2 tbsp vegetable oil
1 1/2 cups boiling water
Food coloring or natural dyes (optional)


Instructions

  1. Make the Basic Air-Dry Clay:
    • In a saucepan, mix baking soda and cornstarch.
    • Add water and stir continuously over medium heat until the mixture thickens into a dough-like consistency.
    • Remove from heat, let cool slightly, then knead until smooth.
    • If adding food coloring, divide into portions and mix in the colors.
  2. Make the Salt Dough Clay:
    • In a mixing bowl, combine flour and salt.
    • Gradually add warm water while stirring until a soft dough forms.
    • Knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and pliable.
  3. Make the Soft Play Clay:
    • In a saucepan, mix flour, salt, and cream of tartar.
    • Add vegetable oil and boiling water. Stir over medium heat until a dough forms.
    • Remove from heat, let cool, and knead until soft. Add food coloring if desired.
  4. Store or Use Immediately:
    • Store clay in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.
    • Let air-dry clay sit for 24-48 hours for hardening.
